The children will be exploring a photographer (Lewis Hine) and focus on how this changed people's thoughts on child labour and the working conditions. We will be using a range of materials to re-create our own Cotton Mill girl, highlighting the key messages behind the image.

Linking closely with our class text, 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas', the children will follow the events of the Holocaust. They will be exploring the Nazi concentration camps, looking carefully at how German's population at the time and the response from Britain. Children will explore the propaganda of deception and the health of the people inside the ghettos. We will be locating the countries involved on a map and marking the Kindatransport route within this. The children will work with Year 5 to celebrate a VE day before concluding their topic with a line from our key text:

'Nothing like that could happen again'

The Vikings

During Spring 1, our topic will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and The Vikings. This will build on the children's knowledge of The Romans. The children will experience the day in the life of a Viking, exploring the Gods and their roles. The children will experience a Viking Day this term, which will enable them to role-play an invasion and have real life experience that will extend their understanding of the topic. We will be finialising the topic by looking at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

The Maya Civilisation

During Spring 2, we will be focusing on 'The Maya'. The children will work through the timeline and use their knowledge organiser to begin this topic. During topic lessons, we will be looking at the daily lives of the Mayan civilisation and exploring their culture, the inventions and where and when they lived. The children will take part in a debate based on John Lloyd Stevens, where they will able to share their knowledge and their new interesting vocabulary. We will be using our knowledge to cook specific food during Design and Technology lessons and writing instructions for Mayan Hot Chocolate!
