Numeracy
Numeracy
In Maths, we follow the White Rose Maths Scheme. We build up our learning by initially using concrete materials, then by using pictures to help us, so that we are finally ready for more abstract concepts.
Place Value
During this block children will begin with place value within 10, then place value within 20, next place value within 50 and finally place value within 100. They will explore objects by sorting them, representing them and counting them. They will count, read and write numbers from 010, then 10-20, 20-50 then 50-100. They will compare numbers using the language ‘greater than, less than equal too’. They will say one more than and one less within each place value block. They will explore tens and ones and bar models to help solve problems and represent numbers.
Addition and Subtraction
During this block children will begin to learn about part whole models, facts families and number bonds to understand the relationship of numbers. They will compare number bonds, add together and subtract by crossing out and counting back. They will then go on to find and make number bonds and add by making 10.
Geometry: Shape
During this block children will learn to recognise and name both 3D shapes and 2D shapes . they will sort the shapes into categories according to the properties of the shapes. They will also explore making patterns with 3D and 2D shapes.
. Measurement: Length and Height
During this block children will learn to use and understand the language of length such as long, longer, short, shorter, tall, taller. They will recognise that this language will change depending on what type of length they are describing and comparing. Children will understand that height is a type of length.
Measurement: weight and Volume
During this block children will be introduced to weight and mass for the first time. They may already have some understanding of heavy and light from their own experience of carrying objects. Children will begin by holding objects and describing them using vocabulary such as heavy, light, heavier than, lighter than before using the scales to check. children may believe that larger objects are always heavier and this misconception will be explored.
Multiplication and Division
During this block children will Count in multiples of twos, fives and tens. Solve one step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays.
Number: Fractions
During this block children will explore finding a half for the first time using shapes and sets of objects. They will use the vocabulary ‘half’ and ‘whole’. They will explore finding a half and finding a quarter.
Geometry: Position and Direction
During this block children will describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three quarter turns
Money
During this block children will recognise and name different coins. They will learn to recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins. Children will use their knowledge of place value to match coins with equivalent values.
Time
During this block children will be introduced to key vocabulary related to time. They will use language such as before, after and next to describe and sort order of events. Children will then be introduced an analogue clock and telling the time to the hour and telling the time to the half hour.
