Here is a quick insight into the type of things that we will be learning about during Autumn 1:

Literacy - This half term, we are basing all of our Literacy work around the topic ‘Toys’  and we will be looking at the following texts; ‘The teddy robber’ and ‘No-Bot’.  We will be exploring interesting vocabulary, writing a sentence, making inferences and writing a retell of a story. We will be focussing on how to compose, say, a sentence before writing it. We will continue to cover the year 1 writing objectives, focusing on sentence writing and punctuation.

Phonics and Reading – Within phonics we will be continuing to learn phase 2 and phase 3 sounds. We will be practising how to sound out and blend words for reading and blend and segmenting words for writing. Within our reading sessions, we will be exploring the meaning of new vocabulary, predicting what might happen in the text and discussing what is happening in the story as well as relating this to our own experiences and ideas.

Maths  - During Autumn 1, we will be focusing on the unit ‘place value within 10’. We will be exploring numbers within 10 by sorting objects, counting objects, representing objects and representing a number of objects. We will also be counting forwards and backwards, finding one more than a number, finding one less than a number and looking at ordinal numbers. We will have lots practical activities when we explore and learn all of the objectives listed above.

Science 'Materials'

Our first science topic is ‘Materials’. We will be naming  different everyday materials and exploring the objects around our classroom to identify which materials they were made from. We will then think about which materials are natural and which are  man made. Within further lessons we will explore the properties of some of the materials and make predictions.

History and Geography - Our topic this half term is ‘Toys’. We will be linking this to the past and thinking about what toys looked like in the past. We will then look specifically at Victorian toy and Victorian dolls. We will then go on to look briefly at the Victorian time and learn about Queen Victoria. We will link this to our geography lessons and look at where Queen Victoria lived. We will also look at maps of the world and locate the United Kingdom on a map, and then we will go on to name the four countries of the United Kingdom and their capital cities.

Religious Education - Over Autumn 1, our topics will be ‘Families’ and ‘Belonging’. We will explore what it means to be part of a family, who is part of our own family and what it means to be a part of God’s family. Some key questions that we will explore are:

  • Who might be in a family?
  • How are families different?
  • How do they show love and care for each other?
  • What things do families do together?

During this topic we will learn how Baptism enables people to belong to God’s family in a special way. As part of our topic ‘Belonging’, we will explore the following questions:

  • How can we help others to feel they belong?
  • What does it feel like to belong?
  • How can we help others to feel they belong?
