Whole school enrichment

All classes access timetabled enrichment though our Forest School, Gardening and Fitness programmes. All children in school also learn to play an instrument as part of our music provision with Rochdale Music Service. Information about these can be found in the tabs at the top of the page.

In addition to this, teachers plan carefully to ensure that the children's curriculum offer is rich and varied.

Whole School enrichment:

Reading for Pleasure is a priority at St John's and our children LOVE to read! All KS1 and KS2 classes will be visiting Waterstones on Manchester this year. They have a budget each to browse the bookshelves and choose a book to keep at home.

We have continued to make new and exciting reading areas in and around the school so children can relax with a book and enjoy reading. Have a look at some of our reading areas in the photographs below!

During National Storytelling week the whole school took part in celebrating the magic of storytelling! Our theme this year was 'Storytelling week with David Walliams'. Classess all took part in activities linked to his books.

In Autumn 2, key stage 1 and key stage 2 began our reading for pleasure challenge! Hundreds of brand new books were bought for us to enjoy! We now have our very own booklets where we tick off each exciting book that we have read and then rate it out of 5 stars. Key stage 2 have the extra challenge of having to review each book they have read. We started off this new reading for pleasure adventure by gathering together and having a funny story read to us by Miss Reynolds. We were surrounded by fairy lights, had a camp fire on our big screens and were able to relax whilst listening. Key stage 1 listened to 'You can't take an elephant on the bus' by  Patricia Cleveland-Peck and Key stage 2 listened to 'The day I swapped my dad for two goldfish' by Neil Gaiman. In celebration assembly each week, each class now has a 'golden reader' chosen by the class teacher and their names will go into a draw to win a reading prize at the end of each half term.

All the children at St. John’s started their Christmas celebrations with 'Panto in a day' in Autumn term. The whole school watched a performance of 'The Wizard of Oz!'

Every class has taken part in Programming and Coding with 'Computer Xplorers'. Staff took part in a session too and we are looking forward to the next workshops!

EYFS and KS1 were lucky enough to have a visit from the Police! The officers brought their Police van to school and the children were able to dress up in Police uniform, sit in the Police van and sound the sirens! It was lovely listening to all the hard work that they do for us in the community.

For World Book Day 2020 we made comic strips. Every class planned, designed, wrote and illustrated their own comics. It was great fun! We presented them in assembly and the winners will receive their very own 'design a comic' book!
